A portrait of Bryce James and the living archive of ski culture that carried him back to the mountains.
Shot for Powder Magazine, Retro Fool is an intimate portrait of Bryce James, home to one of the largest private collections of vintage ski gear in the world. Photographed in Washington State, the story moves through decades of skis, outerwear, and artifacts that trace the evolution of freestyle skiing and the culture that shaped it.
Beyond the visual spectacle, the work centers on memory, identity, and recovery. James’ collection became both a personal archive and a pathway back after a life-altering injury, where physical objects reopened emotional and physical connections to the mountains. The images balance environmental portraiture with dense detail, using color, texture, and repetition to reflect the overwhelming scale of the collection and the stories embedded within it.
The resulting editorial blends documentary observation with character-driven storytelling, capturing how skiing, style, and self-expression can endure long after the turns themselves change.
“Skiing to me is this physical expression of an emotional manifestation. Nobody is telling me what to do or how to do it. I get to fully express myself.”
