A portrait of a rider whose path evolved from competition to creative exploration.
Commissioned as part of SRAM’s True Story series, this project documents Joey Schusler at home in the mountains that shaped him. The series highlights individuals whose connection to riding runs deeper than results, focusing on the values, choices, and environments that define them.
Joey’s roots trace back to competitive downhill racing, where he spent years on the World Cup circuit before gradually shifting his focus toward storytelling. Over time, that transition led him to become an adventure filmmaker and photographer, known for exploring remote terrain and documenting bike culture through a more expansive lens.
The still photography for this project follows that evolution. Rather than centering solely on performance, the imagery reflects a broader relationship with landscape and movement. Joey is photographed both as a rider and as a creative, grounded in Colorado terrain that continues to influence his work.
Within the context of SRAM’s True Story series, the goal was to create photographs that feel observational and honest. The images support a narrative built on longevity, curiosity, and a life shaped by time spent in the mountains.
“Riding was the beginning. Storytelling became the direction.”
“The mountains shaped the rider. The rider shaped the story.”
